Vulnerability Management on IoT Devices

Vulnerability Management on IoT Devices

Internet of Things (IoT) devices have become an essential part of our daily lives. From smart homes to connected cars, IoT devices are everywhere — and they present unique security challenges that traditional vulnerability management programs often overlook.

The IoT Security Challenge

IoT devices often run stripped-down operating systems with limited compute resources, making traditional endpoint agents impractical. Many devices lack patch mechanisms entirely. This creates a blind spot in most vulnerability management programs. Network-based scanning and passive traffic analysis become essential tools for IoT visibility.

Strategies for IoT Security

Maintain a complete inventory of all connected devices. Segment IoT devices on isolated VLANs. Implement network-based vulnerability scanning to identify exposed services. Work with vendors to understand patch availability and end-of-life timelines. Establish compensating controls for devices that cannot be patched.
